The second son of Henry VII, soon after \ATXnt902 his accession\ATXnt0 he married Catherine of Aragon, his brother ArthurÆs widow. With the exception of Mary, their children died in infancy, so from 1527 Henry determined to divo
rce Catherine. His Lord Chancellor, Cardinal Wolsey, was ineffective in obtaining a divorce for him and was replaced by Thomas More in 1529. After 1532 Henry broke with the Catholic church, marrying \ATXnt904 Anne Boleyn\ATXnt0 privately in 1533. The
following year it was enacted that his marriage to Catherine was invalid and that the King was the sole head of the Church of England. To humble the clergy and accumulate new revenues, Henry then proceeded to dissolve the monasteries, a policy that res
ulted in the destruction of great works of art and architecture. In 1536 Catherine died, and Anne Boleyn was executed for infidelity. Henry then married Jane Seymour, who died leaving a son, to become Edward VI. In 1540 Anne of Cleves became his fourt
h wife, in the hope of attaching the Protestant interest of Germany, but dislike of her appearance caused him to divorce her speedily. He then married Catherine Howard (1540), but charged her with infidelity and had her executed two years later. In 154
3 he was married for the sixth and last time to Catherine Parr, who outlived him. In the 1540s he returned to war with France and Scotland, imposing great financial strain on England.\par
